The Invasive Sissoo Tree: A Double-Edged Shade Provider
Sissoo trees, also known as Indian Rosewood trees, have a dual personality. On one hand, they offer blissful shade during scorching summer months, with their vibrant green leaves and rapid growth. But lurking beneath their leafy canopy lies a potential menace: invasive roots that can wreak havoc on your property and even your neighbor’s property.
Sissoos can reach up to 50 feet in height, with glossy, pointed leaves and thrive in climates similar to those found in Arizona. They are like botanical explorers, sending their roots on adventures up to 100 feet away from the trunk. Unfortunately, this wanderlust can lead to trouble for homeowners.
The Trouble with Sissoo Roots
Property Damage: Sissoo roots can be relentless. They threaten sidewalks, driveways, patios, and even housing foundations. Their roots have been known to snake into kitchens and infiltrate plumbing throughout the home.
Sprouting Everywhere: Sissoo trees are sprout factories. Those satellite sprouts emerge from the roots and can disrupt your landscaping. They might even grow into new trees if left unchecked.
How to Tackle the Sissoo Problem
Removal: If you have a Sissoo tree near your home and it’s causing issues, consider removal IMMEDIATELY. However, simply removing the tree will not stop the roots and they can continue to wreak havoc on nearby property. An arborist removing the tree requires special knowledge and skill in order to properly kill the tree and prevent the roots from causing further damage, even after it's cut down. Premier Landscape & Tree Services specializes in this complex 2-month process that involves the following steps:
- Cut Down the Tree: We start by cutting down the tree, leaving the stump exposed above-ground.
- Drill Holes: Immediately after felling the tree, we drill 3/4-inch diameter holes throughout the stump, spacing them 2 to 4 inches apart and making them 4 to 6 inches deep.
- Herbicide Application: We pour a systemic herbicide (containing glyphosate) into these holes. The herbicide will travel to the roots and sprouts, effectively controlling them.
- Stump Grind: We wait 30 to 60 days for the herbicide to successfully absorb into the roots and sprouts, then return to the property to finally grind down the stump.
